Practicability of installation

Many members have written to express their concern about the problems of installing a transponder in simple aircraft.

Even in many well-equipped aircraft, the space behind the panel will be inadequate for a transponder and the power supply may be inadequate.

For light and marginal aircraft, the extra weight of even a portable transponder will make the aircraft untenable. Then there is the safety risk of carrying such an item in the cockpit. For many aircraft there is nowhere to safely stow a portable device. The paper seems to suggest that the CAA think we object to fitting transponders in some aircraft on aesthetic grounds. It is much more a practical and airworthiness issue

Gyrocopters are a particular class of aircraft that are unlikely to be able to accept this change because of space and weight issues.

If you fall into this category of aircraft owner, you will need to make a very clear and specific case as to why this is not practicable. You must make a specific objection related to your aircraft and if you can carry it on to all of type, that would be good. If a good case is made, the CAA are duty bound to deal with it.
